2007 Conestoga Generals Game Reports - Week 6

Tackle 90-2 vs Marsh Creek 3 - 14-0 The Generals suffered their first defeat of the season, losing at home to a tough and determined Marsh Creek 3 team 14-0.  The loss dropped the Generals season record to 5-1.

The MC Eagles received the ball first but could nothing and punted on 4th down.  Noah "The Beast" Offenkrantz and Matt "Hulk" Heron each made key tackles against the Eagles.

On The Big Red Machine's first possession they were able to move the ball with nice runs by Sunshine Aitken and Lightning Larkin.  The Generals, stalling themselves on the drive with a costly holding penalty and a big sack, turned the ball over on downs to MC.

MC found the end zone on their next possession.  The Eagles executed a perfect reverse taking the ball inside the Generals 10 yd line.  The Generals D tightened, with some fine play by  Zach "Nails" Kravitz and Marty "Mad Dog" McGuckin, but they scored on a QB keeper on 4th down.  The Eagles would go up 6-0.

The Generals were determined to even the score when they got the ball back.  Big Red again gained yards on the ground thanks to the blocking of Matt "The Italian Stallion" Izzo and Nicholas "Brickwall" Kick but killed their own drive with foolish penalties.  Taz Reiss completed a beautiful, potentially momentum changing 3rd down pass, but the play was negated due to holding penalty on the Generals.  Big Red would again turn the ball over on downs.

The Generals D, with a big stop by Jake "The Snake" Honesty, held the Eagles giving the O another shot before half  but the Generals fumbled the ball right back to MC.  Again, the D held on 4 downs with Nick "The Falcon" Falcone making a big play.  The Generals would have the ball for one final possession before the half but were unable to get on the scoreboard.

Trailing at halftime for the first time this season, the Generals were anxious to get back on the field and make something happen.  Receiving the kickoff, the O went to work.   Dylan "The Dishwasher" Sidoriak and Jaydon "Golden Dome" McGoldrick punished the Eagles D line with both Sunshine and Lightening gaining significant yards on each carry.  The Generals would grind out three first downs and drive to inside the MC 20, eating up almost all of the 3rd qtr in the process, but MC would register another big sack and the Generals would turn the ball over on downs to the Eagles.

The D kept Big Red in the game but MC's D did the same for them.  Late in the game, after a huge stop by Wild Thing Henry was negated by yet another penalty against the Generals, MC busted a big run up the middle, ultimately scoring another TD and knocking the wind out of the home team's sails.

The final score was MC 14, Generals 0, just not the Generals day.   The Big Red Machine is back on the road again next weekend and will look to regroup against the Souderton Braves.

Flag Team 2 vs Abington Team 2 - 24-0 It was a total team victory with all players contributing to the win.

As always, the game was won on the line of scrimmage.  Two linemen who stood out on both sides of the ball were Domenic Sancherico and Buck Walsh.  Walsh played virtually the whole game and tirelessly blew his opponent off the line of scrimmage.  Sancherico did his usual excellent job on the defensive line, creating opportunities for other players to grab the Abington flags.  He also helped out on the offensive line today.

Nine different Generals carried the ball in the victory.  Remi Beltran, Shane Scott and Nia Scott each made excellent runs and fell just short of scoring points.  Miles Scott and Billy Carlini were exceptional in the backfield running the ball several times for big yardage.

Michael Erickson moved to Center and played an excellent game.  He caught several passes and blocked very well.  He also contributed on defense.  Quarterback, Eric Satell ran for a touchdown and completed 4 out of 5 passes – including 1 touchdown pass.  On defense, Eric dominated his man and disrupted the Abington offense.

Game balls were awarded to Mark Montague and Kyle Nicholson.  Mark was our leading ground gainer on the day including a spectacular run for a touchdown.  He also had a pass reception.  Mark played an outstanding game on defense.  Kyle Nicholson scored 2 touchdowns.  The first was on an excellent run to the outside on the offensive side of the ball.  Kyle’s 2nd touchdown came on his 2nd interception of the day.  On the last play of the game Kyle intercepted a pass and ran it back 70 yards as the General fans celebrated!

Flag Team 3 vs Abington Team 3 – Final Score:  24-6 The Conestoga Generals Flag Football Team 3 won another game today against the Abington Raiders Team 3.  The Generals opened the scoring in the first half with two long touchdown runs by running back Jason Ivey.  Jason’s second score was a 60-yard break down the sideline, outrunning a fast Abington defensive squad.

Brooks Rush, the Generals’ quarterback all season, completed a nice screen pass to Jason gaining important yardage in the first half.  Then, in the second half, Brooks broke through the heart of their defense, dodging and running through them for our third touchdown of the day.
Stuart Berlinger, the Generals’ center, played very well.  Every snap from center was clean, showing all the work Stuart and Brooks have been doing this season to perfect that important exchange.

Running backs Dan Kluge, Sean Meals and Graham Muscella had another excellent game, gaining important yardage on our way to several scores.  On one play late in the game, Dan carried the ball almost 20 yards for an important Generals’ 1st down which set up our final score of the game.

It should be noted that, once again, everyone on our team played both offense and defense.  All the boys played their hardest from the opening play to the final buzzer.  All that training in the summer and at practices is still paying great dividends late in the season.

The offensive/defensive linemen Sage Garito, Dan Kluge, Sean Meals, Graham Muscella and Tommy Boyle all stood strong against a tough Abington line on both sides of the ball.  On offense, they blocked well, opening up holes for our backfield to run through while protecting our quarterback.  On defense, they played exceptionally well, allowing their opponents only two first downs and one score the entire game. In fact, in most cases, their penetration and flag pulling was so effective, they pushed the Raiders offense backwards.

Special mention goes to lineman Sage Garito, who played very well against what may be the biggest player in the league.  Abington’s Neil Durham was a tough opponent.  A seven year old, “Bull” was estimated at 4’8” tall and 110 lbs, with a penchant for knocking his opponents down.  Sage was given the unenviable job of playing across from Neil for nearly every snap of the ball, offensively and defensively.  Sage took on this challenge eagerly, keeping Bull tied up and, for the most part, frustrated throughout the game.

Another highlight was on defense when Sage and Danny Kluge got to the ball carrier together, each pulling a flag from the boy simultaneously.  Our players, coaches, crowd (and at least one of the referees) went wild.

Jason Ivey, supported by a swarming Generals defense, was our team’s top flag-puller, with around 10, including a few diving efforts.

To top off the General’s great performance, Sean Meals scored on the final play of the game. His run to the endzone was filled with at least 6 jukes and cut-backs.  Then, just as he crossed the goal line for our last points of the game, the final buzzer sounded ending the General’s great game and second win of the season.

This Saturday, the Generals Flag Football Team 3 will play their final game of the 2007 season at home at the Valley Forge Middle School at 12:30PM.
